Demolition of 3 Reinforced ‘Tensioned’ Concrete Chimneys for Southfield Girls School, Kettering.

The works had to be completed within a short window of 2 weeks, during the school’s Christmas shut down, ready for the new school year on 3rd January.

Foxglove Contracting Limited was employed by Southfield Girls School to carry out the safe demolition of 3 reinforced ‘tensioned’ concrete chimneys that were in an unsafe condition.

The 3 chimneys were detached from the structure but were only separated from the main school building by 400 mm of space.

The structures were approx 20 meters high and were externally tensioned by 4 x 18 mm diameter stainless steel rods.

A protective screen was erected against the 4 storey main school building and roof protection was put in place- props were also installed between the concrete chimneys and the reinforced concrete frame of the school, prior to demolition.

A heavy duty steel bond was attached to each of the structures, at a height of 9 metres from ground level, and anchored to a second 25 tonne demolition excavator- to prevent the structures from damaging the school building once the external stainless steel tensioned bonds were cut.

At ground level, steel plates were positioned over an existing gas main to protect the service from damage.

The area was fenced off prepared for demolition.

The chimneys were successfully demolished using a Komatsu PC450 LCD-8 long reach machine fitted with VC22 hydraulic pulveriser and the second 25 tonne support tracked excavator.

Once demolished, the resultant waste was loaded onto transport for recycling and protection was removed.

All works were completed on time and with no damage to structures.
